A long, three-day weekend that signals the start of summer, Memorial Day also is a day for military ceremonies, parades, and BBQ. This year may mean the official ceremonies and parades are canceled or downsized, but you can still enjoy a great Memorial Day vacation here in Stowe.

Visit a Local Cemetery
A federal holiday in the United States, Memorial Day is for honoring members of the military who have died while serving in the US Armed Forces throughout the years. While there are arguments about where and when the holiday originated, the commemoration of soldiers’ graves in this country became widespread during the Civil War, and there are still some practices that have survived over the years, decorating soldier’s graves with flags or flowers being the most prevalent.
Take a solemn walk through one of Stowe’s seven cemeteries, the Old Yard Cemetery. This historic cemetery offers a quiet slice of New England history. Veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War veterans, and Green Mountain boys from throughout the years are laid to rest here. Take a moment for a silent prayer of thanks as you look out over the headstones.
If military units marching sharply along and snappy marching bands playing Sousa marches and patriotic music are usually a part of your Memorial Day celebrations, you still have a few options this year. Have your own parade or stream one! Free Wi-Fi in your vacation rental in Stowe makes it easy to watch as many National Memorial Day Parades and tributes that you want.
The National Symphony Orchestra and United Air Force Band both have plenty of YouTube videos that will fill your day with moving, patriotic music. Watch them while you grill those ribs or burgers, or just get that patriotic music on Spotify, Apple Music, or your favorite streaming service going out on the deck while you grill.
Grab your red, white and blue masks, and flags, and have your own parade along the Stowe Recreation Path. This maintained trail is usually filled with outdoor types as they hike, jog, and bike along the path, but it’s going to be a great (and safe) route for your parade. There are plenty of benches along the path perfect for taking a quiet moment of thanks and a few post-worthy pics.
Cookouts and Picnics
Memorial Day celebrations usually include BBQ or a picnic. Not a grill aficionado or culinary artist? Maybe you don’t feel like cooking on your vacation? No problem, just order take-out from a local restaurant like Black Diamond BBQ or the Sunset Grille & Tap Room. Everything’s already packed up and ready to go, making it easy to take along on a hike or picnic.
Have your picnic in a grassy meadow in a local Stowe Park like Thompson Park, which also offers picnic tables, grills, and a great view of Mt. Mansfield. You can take a short break on your parade along the Recreational Path, and settle down at one of the picnic tables along the trail for a tangy BBQ sandwich and cool locally brewed ale.
Have your cookout at the park, or grille out on your deck. Make sure to book one of our vacation rentals featuring a grill so you can move the celebration outdoors. Just pick up your fresh, locally sourced meats, seasonal seafood, poultry, and fresh Vermont cheese from The Butchery here in Stowe. Pick up some fresh sausage made in-house for breakfast, and locally brewed beer or wine for your picnic and after. They offer prepared foods too if you’re not in the grilling mood or need a side dish like Tortellini salad or Israeli couscous. Just don’t forget the hot sauce!
Enjoy the Outdoors
One way to honor our dead soldiers may be to stop while you’re on a hike up and down mountain trails, or along river beds and waterfalls. As you admire the view, stop and give thanks to all the brave men and women who have protected that view over the years.
Moss Glen Falls Trail is an easy hike (just a quarter of a mile) that ends with a bang at the bottom of Moss Glen Falls, one of the area’s prettiest waterfalls. Stowe Pinnacle is considered a moderately difficult hike, but this popular hike has an amazing view that you must see. The viewpoint is breathtaking and is one of the most photographed in the state; it’s easy to see why! You won’t regret this half-day hike.
