Ceremonies & Cemeteries
Official ceremonies may be curtailed or even canceled again this year depending on how things are going with the pandemic, but we can still easily remember our veterans with or without official ceremonies. Check local VA groups, American Legion Posts, and area cemeteries for up-to-date information on this year’s events.
Some veterans groups may go forward with their remembrances this year. If you’re near Ludlow, The American Legion Family of Ballard Hobart Post 36 is planning on a short “parade” starting from their Post’s front porch, over the Main Street Bridge, to the Veterans Memorial Park, and ending at the Pleasant View Cemetery for a short ceremony including three-volley salutes along the way.
Should you decide to maximize your social distancing and stay in your rental, there are many past Memorial Day ceremonies online to watch, and many cemeteries and Veteran groups will be live-streaming their ceremonies. Your Vermont vacation rental’s Wi-Fi and its large flat screens make connecting to these ceremonies easy.
Take a drive to one of the historic cemeteries throughout the state and have your own private ceremony. The Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery (in the center of the state), is home to over 3,200 veterans buried among its gently rolling hills. Our vacation rentals in Vermont are located throughout the state, and all are close to a historic cemetery or two, where you can have your own private ceremony. Throughout the years, people have been honoring their military dead by placing flags and flowers on their graves, this year you can join in the ceremonies. It can be as simple as the laying of a flower or a silent moment of thanks.
The Vermont Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Sharon usually holds an all-night vigil on Memorial Day eve, and Montpelier is home to the Green Mount Cemetery Soldier’s Lot, a small plot of land donated to the government for the burial of Union troops.
Picnics & Cookouts
It wouldn’t be Memorial Day with a picnic or cookout to start the summer. Grill out on the deck of your vacation rental in Vermont while listening to your favorite patriotic music. Locally sourced quail or ribs will taste great when barbequed out on the grill! Vermont Quality Meats is pretty much in the center of Vermont, so you can pick up whatever you need for your cookout on your way to and from your rental. This family-owned butchery works with small family farms and cheesemakers in Vermont and offers a wide variety of meats, cheeses, and specialties. Choose from the usual lamb, poultry, pork, and beef, as well as the not so usual goat, rabbit, and game birds.
Or, order take-out from a local restaurant, then head out to one of the many trails where you can hike through alpine forests, enjoy a fantastic mountain view, up rocky mountain trails, and along rushing rivers. If you’re in the Charlotte area, head to Mount Philo State Park with its mountain top picnic area, and enjoy your meal overlooking a spectacular view of the Champlain Valley. Texas Falls Recreation Area, in Hancock, features cascading waterfalls and picnic spots along the trail. And the Stowe Recreation Path offers plenty of picnic spots with scenic views of covered bridges, meadows, and streams along its path.
Is it really Memorial Day without BBQ? You may think of the South when you think of BBQ, but there’s some great BBQ in Vermont too. Whether you dine in or get some gooey delicious BBQ goodness to go, here are some top BBQ spots in Vermont to try. If you’re near Waterbury, a few miles north of Stowe, head to The Pig—The Prohibition Pig, to be precise—for yummy duck fat fries and great BBQ! If you’ve got a big group with you, give the guys at Black Diamond Barbeque Catering a call. Be sure to place your order way ahead of time, as this is a popular BBQ. Finally, you have to see the big red pigged-out smoker at Back Behind Restaurant & BBQ in Killington! You can’t go wrong with an order of their popular beef “Dino” ribs.
