It’s time for Cinco de Mayo, which means tacos and tequila! Just because you’re vacationing up north in Vermont doesn’t mean you have to forgo your usual celebrations. The weather here may be a little cooler than down south where this holiday is more popular, but we’ve got tequila and many more Cinco de Mayo vacation ideas to warm you up!
Gather all your buddies together – online – for a virtual tasting. Tequila or Mexican beer, margaritas or Palomas, it’s up to you. Remember, this is your chance to try those brands you may not be as familiar with alongside your favorites. Start with the best sipping tequilas, then move on to tequila cocktails. Patrón Silver is good sipped neat, over ice or mixed into your favorite cocktail as is Teremana Reposado Tequila (from non-other than the Rock himself). Here are a few more to try: Casamigos Blanco Tequila, Don Fulano Blanco, Don Julio Añejo or Milagro Tequila’s Select Barrel Reserve Añejo Tequila.
Not in to tequila, and don’t want to try? There’s always Mexican beer or a margarita bar with various fruity flavors. Load up on Dos Equis, Corona and Negro Modelo – beer and tacos were made for each other. Stream some mariachi music in the background, put out a few bowls of chips and freshly-made guac, and you’re ready to go!
Of course, you have to have a taco or fajita bar! Don’t forget the refried beans and red rice on the side, with a yummy Tres Leches cake for desert. It’s easy to whip up these delicious Mexican treats in your rental’s fully equipped kitchen.
Short on time, or maybe you’d rather be enjoying the festivities and not laboring in the kitchen? Take advantage of our Pre-Arrival Groceries or order ahead from one of our local Mexican restaurants. Tres Amigos has all your favorite Mexican dishes plus a few new ones. Try their Street Corn Fundido, Cactus Fries, and Pozole. And they have a whole page of tequila & mezcals to choose from, plus cocktails, margaritas and more. Ranch Camp (“Bikes, Beer & Burritos”) offers a wide selection of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian items. This bike shop/restaurant has burgers, burritos, sandwiches, house-made falafel, a vegan beet burger, and power bowls. Leave room for the Chocolate Lava Cake and the Peanut Butter Mousse Landslide!
Get in plenty of exercise before or after your tequila tasting. A brisk hike along a rocky mountain trail will burn up enough calories for a few shots and some tacos. Head to the Stowe Recreation Path for a scenic hike along a gently sloping trail following the bank of the West Branch Little River, past farms and churches, through meadows and forests, and past restaurants and shops. Keep on the lookout for the occasional moose lumbering by! The path is perfect for mountain bikes too. Pack a picnic lunch of empanadas (so easy to eat on a picnic or while you walk) to enjoy along the way.
Stay inside your roomy rental because it’s time for a dance off – a Mexican dance off! There are plenty of videos on YouTube waiting to be part of your dance party. See who can perfect the Jarabe Tapatio (the Mexican Hat Dance) or the Cha-Cha first!
Get the Kids Involved
If you brought the kids along, get them involved. They can hit the taco bar while you head for the tequila tasting. Besides the taco bar, set up a churros desert table. Order plenty of churros, or have the kids help you make some, then have plenty of toppings for them to dip their sugary treats: Nutella, chocolate, marshmallow sauce, sprinkles, and nuts. The adults will love it too.
Before things get started, why not let them get crafty? Have them make plenty of brightly colored pom-poms and streamers for fun decorations, or decorate tiny sombreros for everyone. Surprise them with each with a mini piñata as a fun treat.
A Little Mexican History
Brush up on your Mexican history. (YouTube to the rescue again!) Not everyone knows that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico’s victory over the French in the Battle of the Puebla in 1862. This story of the greatly outnumbered Mexican force’s triumph is inspiring. Next, watch a few videos on the top ten Mexican phrases everyone should know and practice your accent.
