The Green Mountain Transit’s (GMT) Mountain Road Shuttle is offered, free of charge in the winter, from late November through mid-March. It’s a great way to get around, especially if you aren’t used to driving in snowy, icy conditions.
There are plenty of taxis and limos services in and around Stowe for short trips. In Stowe, taxis may be more reliable than ride share services like Lyft and Uber.
If you do plan on bringing your car or renting one, it’s best to make sure you have a four-wheel drive vehicle. Many mountain roads are all but impassible unless you have four-wheel drive. If you’re here during winter months, don’t forget snow tires or chains too. If you’re not used to driving on mountain roads, you may want to let someone else do the driving. Wouldn’t it be more enjoyable to be able to focus on the amazing mountain scenery instead of the twisty roadway?
So many things are within walking distance of downtown Stowe! Depending on the weather, you can hike, bike, ski or snowshoe to shops, restaurants, and some of the most scenic spots in the country. Sunset Rock is right in the middle of historic Stowe Village and there are tons of trails on Mount Mansfield. Plus, the gondola ride up to the peak offers a gorgeous panoramic view of the area.
The Stowe Recreation Path is used year-round by residents and guests as they hike, bike, skate, cross-country ski and snowshoe along its path. Starting in historic Stowe Village, the path meanders along the West Branch River through meadows and forested areas, farms and historic churches. It winds past shops and restaurants like Doc Ponds, Idletyme Brewing Co., Tres Amigos, The Backyard, Stowe Bee Bakery & Café, and Piecasso Pizzeria & Lounge. And don’t forget the GMT’s free winter shuttle so you can walk, snowshoe or ski as far as you like, then take the shuttle to your next destination.
